The Commercial Gate
Noctilucens is an affiliate publication. Before a tool enters a ranking, it passes the Commercial Gate: we must be able to earn a commission from it today or have a credible path to earning one in the next 12 months. If a tool's vendor runs no affiliate programme and is unlikely to launch one, it does not get a ranking slot.
This is honest disclosure. Most comparison sites apply some version of this filter silently. We state it publicly because it changes how you should read the rest of the policy.
Within the commercially-gated pool, rankings are honest
The Commercial Gate is a filter on eligibility, not on ranking order. Within the pool of tools that can pay us, rank is set by:
- Documented features per vendor public sites and documentation
- Public list pricing as of the article's "Last Updated" date
- Category positioning analysis and buyer-intent fit to the article's specific title
- Independent third-party benchmarks where cited in a specific article
Affiliate commission rates do not influence rank order. If Tool A pays us twice what Tool B pays us but Tool B is the better pick for the buyer, Tool B wins the article. No exceptions.
When a non-monetizable tool is the right answer, we name it
If a tool we cannot earn from is genuinely the right pick for a specific reader or context, we name it inside the article, explicitly, with a caveat noting we do not earn from it. The scarce page slot still prioritises commercially-eligible options, but the truth comes first inside the prose.
Examples of tools that may appear with this caveat treatment: products with no public affiliate programme (Claude Pro, ChatGPT Plus, Stripe Atlas, Mercury banking), enterprise-only tools that do not offer publisher commissions (Harvey AI, Smartly.io, Drift, Intercom), and open-source or free-tier options where they beat commercial alternatives for the use case.
Research methodology
Noctilucens rankings are produced through AI-assisted research synthesising public information: vendor websites, pricing pages, documentation, independent benchmarks where cited, and category-positioning analysis. We do not claim hands-on testing of every product at launch.
As affiliate relationships mature and vendors grant direct product access, articles get refreshed with testing-grounded updates. The "Last Updated" date on each article reflects the most recent research refresh.
Pricing accuracy
Every price on this site reflects the public list price at the article's "Last Updated" date. Prices change. If you spot an outdated price, tell us and we will update the article.
No sponsored placement
Vendors do not pay us for placement or rank position. Affiliate commissions happen after a reader clicks a link and signs up on their own decision. The Commercial Gate is a scope rule for which tools are eligible for consideration. It is not a sponsorship slot.
Corrections
Errors get corrected. Outdated picks get demoted. If a tool we recommend is acquired, sunsets, or has a feature regression, the article is updated. Tell us via the link on the About page.
